WEST HARTFORD, Conn. – UAW Amalgamated Local 376 and management at both Colt’s Manufacturing Company and Colt Defense came to agreement on a new two-year labor contract. The new contract will replace one that, with extensions, had been in effect for five years at the shared New Park Avenue manufacturing facility. Terms of the new contract were not disclosed.

Meeting since February to negotiate new contract terms, the management negotiating committees of both companies presented their last, best and final offers to the union shortly before the existing contract expired at midnight on Saturday. Yesterday morning, the union negotiating committee summoned its membership to a meeting and recommended ratification and approval of the new contract, which the membership voted to accept.

These measures averted the possibility of labor action, allowing over 400 workers to return to work today after a weekend of uncertainty. Approximately one third of the workers are employed by Colt’s to make handguns while the remainder is employed by Colt Defense to make rifles and machine guns.

Carlton Chen, Colt’s spokesman, said “Colt’s management believes the terms of the new contract will help us maintain our competitiveness in the marketplace.  We have a good relationship with the union and our workers who are union members and will continue to work with them as a team.”
